Ryukyu indigo's distinct texture and depth, which is unreplicable by chemical dyes, has been aptly named "Ryukyu Blue.®" At Ryukyu Indigo Laboratory, we delve into the potential of indigo by cultivating our fields, nurturing the plants, crafting the dye, and meticulously processing it, embodying our dedication to this art.

We aim to evolve Okinawa's prized Ryukyu indigo tradition into a lasting industry for future generations

Ryukyu indigo, cultivated in Okinawa since ancient times and used as an indigo dye, is indispensable for dyeing and weaving in Okinawa. Its cultivation method is harsh, and growing high-quality indigo leaves requires meticulous cultivation management, technique, and physical and mental strength to endure the hard work in the process. Moreover, it takes many years of experience and intensive training to determine the amount of limestone water used in the fermentation and production stages.

Through the meticulous hand-dyeing and washing process using indigo crafted from ancient techniques, Ryukyu indigo achieves a distinctive texture and depth unattainable with chemical dyes, bringing a unique expression to each piece. This indigo might well symbolize the local culture, echoing the profound beauty of Okinawa's seas. Yet, as time progresses and cheaper synthetic indigos become more widespread, the number of artisans dedicated to this labor-intensive indigo production has dwindled.

Having been exposed to the beauty of Ryukyu indigo, I wondered how I could pass on this culture.

In an era where "culture" and "heritage" are terms often tossed around lightly, their profound significance is seldom embraced fully to inspire genuine engagement from the ground up. "Culture" has been the cornerstone of my journey, driving my passion for crafting products from the moment the concept captivated me. Faced with the apparent indifference towards cultural preservation, I felt compelled to act, reasoning that if not me, then who? I am often questioned, "Why would someone in a position to create spaces through design dedicate themselves to this in today's world?" I felt the time was now, and I persisted, convinced that here lies my path forward. The journey begins with indigo cultivation.

We start by preparing the soil, employing a process of trial and error in our management techniques. Although transforming this into a tangible product is a lengthy endeavor, beginning from the cultivation of raw materials is crucial for preserving Ryukyu indigo as an emblematic craft of Okinawa. We have christened this distinctly textured and deep hue, unachievable with synthetic dyes, as "Ryukyu Blue,®" a testament to the essence of Okinawan culture.
