Announcement of Toru Umehara’s Solo Exhibition “Our Holes”: A Material/Craft Collaboration with the Ryukyu Indigo Research Institute

Thank you very much for your continued support of the Ryukyu Indigo Research Institute.

We are pleased to announce “Our Holes,” the first solo exhibition in Okinawa by musician and visual artist Toru Umehara in approximately two years.

In this exhibition, “Our Holes,” Umehara takes as his starting point what he calls “Okinawa’s magnetic field.” Working in collaboration with the Ryukyu Indigo Labo, he has created dyeing works using <RYUKYU BLUE®>, based on original frottage drawings of landscapes and traces collected during his research residency.
By layering these with sounds recorded on-site, textiles, and images of the landscape—among other multi-layered materials—he constructs a new space where multiple times and boundaries intersect.

In this exhibition, where sight, sound, and overlapping timelines resonate, visitors can experience the “presence” and “fluctuations” inherent to the land of Okinawa through all five senses.

An opening reception will be held on the first day, Friday, December 5, starting at 3:00 PM.
The artist is scheduled to be present, so please stop by if you are visiting Okinawa.
